Best Layette Picks
Hand-me-downs are the bizness. They’re also a really awesome, eco-friendly way for your friends to show you their love. But let’s be honest, y’all; sometimes you just wanna get some cool sh*t for your new baby – especially if s/he is your first.
Layette is really just a fancy French name for tiny onesies/footies/blankies that are cute as hell that your baby will wear/use for a short time… then poop on. Also: photo shoots!
Over the years, the one thing my customers have come to expect from the lines I carry is quality and durability, not just aesthetics; you want your adorable onesie to hold up for more than three washes. Rest assured that 99% of everything on this list has been personally vetted by either me or my customers.
And since organic apparel is my jam, you’ll be happy to know that most of this collection is sustainable and eco-friendly to boot.
Without further delay, here are our favorite layette pieces!
Best Newborn Apparel…
There are some common themes you’ll notice, and they’re all for convenience; specifically, diaper-changing convenience. Kimono style one-pieces, zippered footies and newborn gowns (with the gathered elastic on the bottom) are great since you don’t have to pull a poop-stained outfit off over baby’s head.
Because, gross.
$ – BabySoy
A soft, economic basic made from soybeans (what?!).
$-$$ – L’ovedBaby
Superior quality, great bargain! L’ovedBaby is simple and elegant, which makes for a great basic addition to your layette rotation… Organic cotton, and soft as whaaat?! (so soft 🙂)
$$-$$$ – Zutano
A time-tested and trendy customer favorite… patterns for days. Great for gifting too!
$$ – Finn & Emma
Organic line, famous for fab unisex pieces (to help offset baby’s pinks & blues).
$$ – Aden + Anais
We’ve always loved a+a’s blankets, so we’re super stoked about their layette! Perfect for warm/hot climates. Note that muslin doesn’t take abuse well, so we advise you hand wash these pieces and hang them to dry.
$$ – Milkbarn
Hand-picked organic favorite.
Killing it with these patterns… (foxes + hedgehogs, amirite?!)
$$$ – Kickee Pants
Bamboo, y’all. Sooooo soft and stretchy.
$$ – Burt’s Bees Baby
From the company who has brought you yummy skincare for years, comes some adorable, organic layette.
$$$ – Hanna Andersson
Organic. Swedish. Durable. Washes like you wouldn’t believe…
(great for hand-me-downs when you’re done).
Best Blankets & Lovies…
Blankets are great for swaddling your newborn — and for snuggling after the swaddling days are over. A lovie (lovey) is the 21st century’s colloquialism for that nasty ass blankie you used to drag everywhere when you were little. Except these are more fun and you won’t be embarrassed to be seen with them like your poor mother was.
$ – Lulujo
An LL staff favorite! Contemporary prints + budget friendly.
$$ – aden + anais
$$ – Little Unicorn
Boutique quality + a modern aesthetic. Perfect for nursery accents.
$$ – Milkbarn
$$ – Cuski
Customer favorite, can absorb the scent of mom (seriously)…
works for teething too.
$plurge – Spearmint Baby
Super adorable + unique blankets from the beloved Spearmint Baby. Be sure to check out their amazing nursery decor too!
